So, you’ve seen the flips, the spins, and the cheers echoing down the whitewater course, and now you’re wondering how to get involved in freestyle kayaking. You’re in the right place!
Freestyle kayaking is an exciting and expressive paddlesport where you surf waves, perform aerial tricks, and use the energy of the river to your advantage. Whether you’re brand new to kayaking or already comfortable with moving water, there’s a route for everyone.

Where to Start
To get started, all you really need is:
- Access to a supportive club or venue
- A kayak suited for freestyle
- A sense of fun and adventure!
First Moves to Learn
Beginner freestyle doesn’t mean basic, it means learning the foundations that will eventually lead to huge tricks and competition runs. Here are a few moves most new paddlers start with:
- Spin: A smooth 360° rotation on flat or moving water.
- Shuvit: A 180° spin one way, then a 180° spin back the other—great for developing control.
- Cartwheel: A vertical rotation end-over-end.
- Loop: The classic front flip—one of the most recognised freestyle moves.
- Blunt: A dynamic, wave-based move turning the kayak explosively over 45°.
- Back Loop: You guessed it—a loop done in reverse!
As your skills develop, you can build towards more complex tricks like the Space Godzilla, McNasty, Phonics Monkey, and the legendary Tricky Woo (yes, it comes with a shout!).

How Freestyle Works
Freestyle is open to all skill levels and is typically grouped like this:
- Novice – where every paddler begins
- Intermediate – more consistent with moves, building combos
- Elite – current or former GB standard paddlers
There are several ways to participate and be scored:
- Fun Competitions – relaxed scoring where creativity counts (yes, paddle spins and wave dances can earn you points!).
- Coached Judging – helps you develop moves using feedback on initiation, completion, and execution.
- ICF Competitions – formal rules and scoring based on international criteria. Moves must meet precise definitions and angles.

Join the Community
From local club events to national leagues, there’s always something happening:
- Nottingham Freestyle League (NFL) – fun, monthly comps with entry levels from 200–2000 points.
- Club Events – check our Facebook for our next friendly event.
- GB Youth Series – ideal for paddlers 11–17, offering experience and progression.
Protect Your Ears!
Ever wonder why so many freestyle paddlers wear ear plugs? It’s to protect against Surfer’s Ear, a bony growth that forms from repeated cold water exposure in the ear canal. If you’re going upside down a lot (and you will!), It’s an essential bit of gear.
